Net Metering

With net metering, the solar energy you generate is worth the amount you have to pay for electricity. Power you generate means less you have to buy from the utilility, and as electricity costs rise the value of your solar also increases. You use the solar energy that you generate and any extra creates a credit on your bill that you can use up in the future.

Energy Sell Back Program / Renewable Energy Growth (REG) / Feed-in Tariff

This incentive has many names, we call it the sell back program for simplicity. With this program you can sell all the energy you generate to the utility at a fixed price for 15 years. The solar energy you generate will lower your electric bills and if there is extra the utility will pay you a check every month for the excess.

State Grant / Renewable Energy Fund (REF)

This incentive is only available to some installations and it must be paired with net metering. Qualification is dependent on the orientation of your roof and shading on site. If your roof is eligible, the state provides some money to help with the up front cost of going solar. If you are interested, please contact us and set up a free site visit so that we can measure your roof to see if it qualifies.

Federal Tax Credit

You can claim a federal tax credit for 26% of the installed cost of your solar array and any batteries paired with solar.

Connected Solutions Battery Demand Incentive Program

The utility will pay you if you let them use your batteries to help meet peak demand on the grid in the summer. This is one of the best incentives for battery installation in the country.

About REF

CommerceRI’s Renewable Energy Fund (REF) exists to help expand the role of renewable energy throughout Rhode Island, so the state and its citizens can reap the full benefits of cost-effective renewable energy from diverse sources.

REF provides grants for renewable energy projects that have the potential to produce electricity in a cleaner, more sustainable manner, while stimulating job growth in the green technology and energy sectors. Using funds from the “system benefit charge” on electric bills and alternative compliance payments received from retail electricity providers, CommerceRI funds renewable energy projects in Small Scale solar, Commercial Scale, and Community Renewables.
